Work to Resume on The dot

May 4, 2020

Construction on The dot—the City of Ferndale’s Development on Troy mixed-use parking development—will resume on Thursday, May 7. This follows Governor Whitmer’s April 29 announcement updating the State’s “Stay Home, Stay Safe” Order, allowing construction work to resume on May 7 with enhanced social distancing protocols.

As work resumes at The dot site—and other sites throughout the community—the City will require all contractors to comply with the COVID-19 Field Operations Policy or submit a copy of their own that meets or exceeds these standards, which include:

  • Maintaining safe social distancing
  • Daily screening of employees for COVID symptoms and a plan for managing sick employees
  • Enhanced disinfection and sanitization of tools and common areas, and more.

As mentioned in our April 14 update, our primary focus will now be on completing the public portion of The dot project—including completing and opening the parking structure, reopening West Troy Street, completing the downtown compactor enclosure, and finishing alley improvements. The mixed-use components of the project—including street-level retail and fourth-floor office—will pause until our local economy (including prospective retail and office tenants) has a chance to recover.

The effect of the three-week closure and restructured construction plan on the project’s timeline in the wake of COVID is unknown at this time. While work may resume on May 7, the workforce itself may be impacted as construction teams accommodate social distancing and enhanced safety measures. The supply chain remains choppy as well, with borders still closed and supplies and shipments being limited. As always, our project management team will work closely with contractors to determine new timeline information and present it to the public as soon as it’s available; please be patient as we work through our “new normal” during this unprecedented situation.
